Anston Stones South Anston Rotherham

Location: Anston Stones, South Anston, Rotherham

Date: 22 June 2007

Time: 2230 Hours

E.M.F. Reading: 0.0

Temperature reading: 6.2 Degrees Centigrade

Investigators: Richard, Joe, Mike, Wez

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Night Vision Camcorders, Digital Voice Recorder, Thermometer, Torches.

Experiments: None

Overview:

In the summer of 1993 a man named Mr Fox decided to go for a walk to the stones. They had reached one of the many rocky outcrops about half a mile into the expanse of green belt land, when Mr Fox decided to go on ahead and climb to the top of a small crag. As he was walking in between two columns of rock, he felt curiously uneasy, as though he was being watched. Undeterred, he found a foothold and began to climb the rock face. He reached the top and was Astonished to see a huge black dog, something like a rottweiler but much larger (in fact Mr Fox noted that it was the largest dog he had ever seen), approximately ten feet away from him. The dog stood motionless and stared, growling. Mr Fox remembers feeling as though he was not witnessing an "earthly" event, and described a sudden chill coming over him.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a mild and calm night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The main area we were concentrating on was the rock face where Mr Fox had witnessed the incident back in 1993.

We started the first vigil at the Rock face itself, where Mr Fox saw the dog. Not much happened during the time we were there, but as Joe was about to finish the conclusion on video, when the team heard what they describe as something large moving through the undergrowth at the foot of the rocks.

At first thinking this was someone walking they called out to see if there was anyone there, but no reply was received back. Mike and Wez went down the rock face to investigate further, but there was no sign of anyone there.

Conclusion:

We left the area around 0100 hours a little confused with their results of the evening. After reviewing the video footage at a later date unfortunately the noise could not be heard due to the noise coming from the traffic off the nearby A57. The team agreed that the place was quite eerie and agreed that they would return to the area again in the future to try and solve the mystery of the demonic dog and their own experience of the strange movement in the undergrowth.

Overview:

This sighting was sent to us by a Rotherham-ghosts website visitor, who reported that she had seen a voile shaped figure run across the road in front of their car one evening. Never telling anyone of their story, until they contacted us. We put this sighting on our website and soon received a further reported sighting in the same location but on a different date.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a mild but calm night, the skies were clear and there was an eerie silence about the place. We parked in the car park at the bottom of the graveyard near the old ruin and sat in the car a moment and waited.

The main area we were concentrating on was the road at the entrance of the old graveyard that leads down to Doncaster Road.

We started the first vigil sat in the car as it was freezing outside, we just sat and waited for a while, it was a very clear night and it wasn’t long before our eyes began to play tricks on us as we sat there. Both Joe and Richard both could see fleeting shadows around the entrance of the grave yard. After watching these for a short while, they decided to get out of the car and go and take a look. As they headed towards the entrance of the carpark, it soon became apparent that shadows we being caused be the streetlight nearby. They hung around the entrance for a while, when they we startled to hear a bang on the car, the sound was just like a fist hitting one of the panels. Running back to investigate, they couldn’t see anything or in fact see any marks where the noise had impacted. They hung  around for a little while longer before calling it a night and leaving it for a another day.

Conclusion:

Joe and Richard left the area around 1230 hours cold and confused as to what the noise could have been that hit the car, but vowed to go back again once the weather got warmer.

Since that date, Richard and Joe often visit the location with a hope of seeing the black shape, but to date they haven’t, but I’m sure their quest will continue.

Carlisle Street Swinton Rotherham

Location: Carlisle Street, Swinton

Time: 1930 Hours

Temperature reading: 3.5 Degrees Centigrade

Investigators: Richard, Joe, Mike

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Night Vision Camcorders, Digital Voice Recorder, Thermometer, Torches.

Experiments: None

Over view:

This reported sighting was left on Rotherham-ghosts guest book, where figures from another era are seen on a regular basis. Just under the railway bridge on the right hand side. Carlisle Street, is between Swinton and Kilnhurst

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold and windy night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The main areas we were concentrating on were the railway bridge and the waste land on the right hand side just under the railway bridge, coming from Swinton. With the main areas being very close to each other, we decided to park up and wonder around between the 2 locations throughout the whole investigation.

We were having problems with the sound on our videos cameras due to the bad weather, so the majority of the time the cameras weren’t rolling, however, just before we began to film a whistling noise could be heard coming from the deserted waste land. Which did sound human, but we had to dismiss this due to such bad weather. During another the break in the filming Mike felt a bang on his arm and what looked like something moving around the fence area, so a photo was taken with a digital camera by Joe and a mist was caught. We found this quite strange because of the high winds.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left the area around 2130 hours, having experienced some strange occurrences down there, unfortunately due to the wind, most of the noises we experienced had to be dismissed, but I must say it is a very spooky place down there.

Since the investigation more people have been in touch with Rotherham-ghosts to say that they have also experienced some strange happenings down there too.

Rotherham-ghosts do intend of visiting the area again once the weather is a little better.

Overview:

This sighting was sent to us by a Rotherham-ghosts website visitor, who informed us of a sighting on the road of a man who was dressed in 80s clothing after a group of people were driving down one night. Armed with this information we went to have a look and see for ourselves.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a mild and calm night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The main area we were concentrating on was the road that leads from the residential area down towards the bend in the road, we had also received information that a further sighting had been seen near the entrance to the fishing ponds.

We started the first vigil on the road, just before the bend, however after spending over an hour there nothing much seemed to be happening so we headed off down to the carpark where the second signing had been seen, but again nothing paranormal seemed to be happening here either.

Conclusion:

Joe and Richard left the area around 0100 hours a little disappointed with their results of the evening. After reviewing the video footage taken on the evening, nothing was seen or heard.

Since that date, Richard and Joe often visit the location with a hope of seeing the 80s man, but to date they haven’t, but I’m sure their quest will continue.

Overview

The Earl of Strafford as it stands today was mainly built during the 16th century but part of the building dates back to the early 13th century.  It was originally constructed as a Dower house for the Fitzwilliam family until the Kent family took over the estate in the 18th century.  Local industrialist Robert Jenkins as also lived at the property as as George Bentley, a high ranking councillor of the rime.

The property is most famous for being the home of the Kent family and is still considered by many to be haunted by certain members of this legacy.  Ann Kent committed suicide by hanging herself from the banister that is still in use today.  She was angry with her father as he forbid her from seeing the local bakers son who she had fallen madly in love with.  Does her restless soul still walk the corridors of this ancient establishment?

Thomas Wentworth is also a prominent figure in the buildings history.  He was secretly buried in the church next to the property and legend as it that the house as a series of secret tunnels leading to the church and nearby Conisburgh Castle.  These very tunnels are said to have transported Thomas during the dead of night.  During the latter half of the 18th century renovations at the church were carried out and a horrific discovery was made.  Three skeletons were found all lying together, one with no skull, one of an old lady and one of a deformed child.  Local legend as it that these skeletons are the remains of Thomas, his wife Margaret and their child.

The Investigation

We arrived at the location at 10pm and headed into the game’s room to brief the team on how the night would be run.  We would be joined on the vigil by Linda, the landlady of the Earl and a few staff members who were interested in seeing if the stories about the establishment were true.  We started the night by having another quick tour of the property to see where we would be conducting the vigils, setting up trigger objects etc but left David , the group’s medium, downstairs in case anything was mentioned regarding the hauntings.  Once the tour was complete we rejoined the rest of the group to relax for half an hour, as we couldn’t start the investigation until the pub was closed and cleared.  Once the majority of people had left we sent David on a walk round to see what they could pick up on whilst Paul, Richard, Neil and myself conducted the baseline tests in the vigil areas.  The baseline test didn’t reveal anything out of the ordinary with no E.M.F readings in any room and a steady 17 degrees Celsius throughout the building.  Once all the floor plans had been completed and the mediums had done their initial ‘tuning in’ we headed back down to the hub for a final equipment check.  We briefed the team members who would be joining us on what to expect, how to conduct themselves etc and made our way to the first vigil area.

Vigil 1 – Upstairs Function Room

The function room is located upstairs directly over the main bar area and is currently being used as a store room.  Many staff members don’t like to be in this room alone but this could been down to the fact the room is much colder than the rest of the pub, as bare stone walls and, as its some distance from the main bar area, is very quiet.  Once we were at the location we all tried to get as comfortable as possible and turned out the lights.  We sat for a good 10 minutes in silence to see if we could pick up on anything, it wasn’t long before things started to happen.  Richard was the first to experience anything odd during this vigil.  He observed a ball of light moving from the centre of the room to the rear exit (see plan) which subsequently disappeared as quickly as it had come.  We all heard a few distinct tapping noises coming from the back of the room close to the bar area but we couldn’t ascertain what these noises could be.  We asked Linda, the landlady if these noises were attributed to any machinery/heating devices but she said she didn’t believe this to be true.  We were joined on this vigil by 2 members of staff who, for reasons unknown, both screamed and jumped up from their seats at the same time.  Once they had calmed down we asked them what had caused them to do this but all they could give as an explanation was that they ‘felt’ as if something was stood behind them.  We went down the usual path of questioning to try and eliminate any possible natural causes for this sudden outburst but they were both adamant nothing had fallen on them or neither one of them had accidentally brushed against the other to make them jump.  What we found most compelling about this small incident was the fact they both jumped up at exactly the same time.  Usually if someone jumps up and scares the person sat next to them there is a small delay in the other person’s reaction, this was not the case here.

The mediums were picking up on a lot from this room.  Both were giving names that could tie in with the building but mostly their attentions were drawn to an old wooden ceiling beam.  David stated the beam was used for multiple hangings and he had the overwhelming feeling of someone being tortured for ‘fun’ in this room.  He could feel that someone had literally been kicked all around the room purely for pleasure and this person was probably a peasant farmer.  As this was being said Richard told the group he could see what appeared to be a dark shadowy figure stood near the back of the room.  The 2 mediums confirmed this but they couldn’t lock on to who this person was.  David then picked up on what appeared to be a strange piece of information.  He said he had the feeling of some kind of candle lit midnight procession from the location to the church some 20 meters away.  This didn’t seem to add up at first but it was later confirmed by Neil, DVPI’s historian that this did indeed happen.  The room then seemed to fall ‘flat’ for a short space of time but it wasn’t long before the mediums and Richard again picked up on the presence of a man in the room standing near the back exit.  The whole area became much colder at this point and a cool blast of air could be felt coming from the general direction of the door.  Temperature checks were made at this point but no drop was recorded but the room had definitely become cooler.  It was at this point that Linda decided enough was enough and left the vigil to rejoin her husband downstairs.  The presence of a man was still evident near the back of the room although not as strong as before when Paul captured a curious light anomaly on his night vision camcorder.  Further analysis of what this actually could be is still ongoing at the time of writing so right now this remains unexplained.  After a further 15 minutes nothing more seemed to be happening so we decided to call an end to a very productive first vigil and headed to our second area

Vigil 2 – Private Quarters (Bedroom & Living Room)

The owners of the Earl very kindly gave our group permission to investigate their private residence above the pub as activity had been witnessed there many times before.  Linda described to us how she had felt her bed physically shaking on a few occasions and this bizarre phenomenon had also been witnessed by her husband on a separate occasion.  We decided to start our vigil in the bedroom area and were again joined by some of the Earl’s staff for the session.  We firstly checked our trigger object but no movement was detected at this time.  We made ourselves comfortable and once again sat in silence for a few minutes to see what we could pick up on.  After a while we decided to try ‘calling out’ to see if we could get any response from whatever may have been lurking around us.  After 15 minutes of trying nothing was coming through so we asked the mediums if they could get anything.  They both said they felt nothing untoward in the bedroom area and although they felt that activity had been present in the area nothing was showing itself tonight.  We then had some very interesting news from our historian.  It transpired that the living room was formally the bedroom of Ann Kent, the lady who hung herself from the properties staircase.  This seemed too good an opportunity to miss so we ended our bedroom vigil to take up residence in the front room.

It is worth pointing out at this stage that only Neil and myself knew the living room was formally the bedroom of Ann and only myself, Neil and Paul knew she had hung herself.  This made what happened next even more interesting.  We made ourselves comfortable and sat quietly waiting for something to happen.  After a few moments our mediums became aware of an ‘Annabel’ entering the room with us.  This name is very similar to Ann who is known to haunt the premises.  To back this up Richard suddenly said he had really bad pains around his neck.  Again, maybe this is some connection to Ann hanging herself and showing us she was amongst us.  The whole room seemed to descend into darkness whilst these new revelations were being spoken about so we decided to try calling out once again to see if anything would come through.  Although nothing was happening during our ‘open’ questions Richard said that whatever was stood at the door had come into the room, the mediums confirmed this but it wasn’t Ann, it was a male presence who wouldn’t make himself known.  With nothing further happening we decided to end the session and head down to the basement/cellar area for our next vigil

Underneath the main pub is a section of cellar that used to be the property’s dungeon.  Most of this area as since been converted into the gent’s toilets but a small section of the original stone structure still exists.  This location is very interesting as there are the remains of an old spiral staircase which used to lead straight up to what is now the owner’s private quarters.  Also down here are supposedly a series of tunnels which lead to the church and to nearby Conisburgh Castle although we found no evidence that these still exist.  Once in the location we turned off the lights and tried to settle into our new surroundings.  David, our head medium, came out with an astonishing statement almost straight away.  He said he could hear a male voice shouting, “stop running up and down those stairs Kitty or you will hurt yourself”.  This, in our opinion, is fantastic evidence as history documents a young girl who used to reside at the property called Kitty who sadly lost her life there at the age of 5.  David, like the others, had no idea of the property’s history and in our opinion Kitty is a far cry from the usual run-of-the-mill names that always seem to crop up.  With this new evidence we decided to concentrate on Kitty and see if anything would come forward.  I started to ask out loud if Kitty would make herself known to us and no sooner had we done this we all heard a series of bangs coming from outside the door.  We asked if this ‘sign’ could be repeated and again, taps could be heard along with a ‘whooshing’ sound.  We immediately exited the location to check if anyone had ventured down but the whole area was clear.  We also checked with the people upstairs to see if anyone had come down but no one had been anywhere near.  What these sounds were still remains unexplained but whatever they were seemed to be in direct response from our questions.

Vigil 4 - Games Room in Main Bar Area

We decided to do some glass divination experiments during this vigil as an attempt to create more energy to see if anything would manifest for us.  The D.V.P.I team started this off by placing an upturned glass on one of the pub tables and placing one finger tip on each.  After a few moments the glass began to move and seemed to be reacting to our questions.  After some careful questioning it appeared we were in contact with a spirit called ‘Ann’, possible the same Ann who came through upstairs.  We continued this for approximately 10 minutes but then decided to let the bar staff have a go as some of them were a little sceptical about what they were seeing.  All of us backed off and allowed the 3 staff members to have a go and at first, nothing was coming through.  Its always a little worrying when the ‘investigators’ get the glass moving but then it wont budge for the guests as it would be very easy for them to assume we were somehow manipulating the glass ourselves.  After a few more moments the glass began to move very slowly and then seemed to speed up quickly.  The guests seemed a little taken aback by this but stuck with it.  I asked out some questions and it came through that ‘Ann’ was the person who killed herself at the pub many years ago but was quite happy being there.  She was also happy to communicate with us and told us there were more than her haunting the building.

Vigil 5 – Séance in Restaurant Area

As the investigation was nearing an end we decided to do a group séance in the restaurant area of the bar.  All investigators and guests joined in as did Linda.  We formed a big circle around a dining table and tried to tune in.  David did an ‘opening up’ session with the group first to try and heighten our senses to whatever may be around.  The séance on the whole was a little disappointing as nothing seemed willing come through.  Both mediums picked up on things that were around us but nothing seemed to want to communicate.  David picked up on the fact that Ann was with us but was unable tp speak for reasons unknown.  Whilst we were in the séance we did hear some odd bangs but these could have been attributed to the various pieces of pub machinery, pumps, fridges etc.  One spirit did seem to come though but was not attached to the property.  It seemed to be linked to one of the guests and as the message that came through was personal it will not be written in this report.

Conclusion

The Earl of Strafford is a very old building with plenty of traceable history behind it.  Bar staff, members of the public and the owners have all seen/heard things whilst being in the establishment and we encountered things we could not explain.  The mediums picked up some very interesting facts that they were 100% not aware of before we went to the venue and is historically correct.  All in all, a very good investigation and we are hope we can conduct a follow up investigation sometime in the future.

Hesley Woods Thorpe Hesley Rotherham

Location: Hesley woods at Thorpe Hesley

Experiments: None

Overview:

Hesley woods at Thorpe Hesley is also know to be haunted, there have been many sightings there where some lads were camping out near the bridge when they saw a figure wearing a black cloak walking deeper in to the woods. Many other sightings also include strange shapes appearing and then disappearing, along with light formations and unexplained footsteps and noises.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a mild but calm night, the skies were clear and there was an eerie silence about the place. We parked on the road and walked into the woods down the paths to where the bridge is.

The main area we were concentrating on was the bridge and a small clearing to which we presumed was the area where the lads were camping.

With the location being outside we sat a waited a while listening to the wildlife scurrying around. The area did feel quite calm and relaxing, nothing much seemed to happening so we decided to take a walk down the footpath into the woods.

The visibility was quite poor and we had the feeling of being watched but put this down to the conditions we were in. Again further strange noises we all around us, but we put this down to wildlife.

We hung around until 01.00 and decided to make our way back to the car and not much was happening.

Conclusion:

We left the area around 01.10 hours a bit disappointed with the investigation, but as we know so well, you can expect to see anything every time. But their quest will continue and will visit again another day.

Hoober Stand Hoober Rotherham

Location: Hoober Stand, Rotherham

Date: 30 December 2006

Time: 22:30 Hours

E.M.F. Reading: 0.1

Temperature reading: 1.0 Degrees Centigrade

Investigators: Richard, Joe, Wez

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Night Vision Camcorders, Digital Voice Recorder, Thermometer, Torches.

Experiments: None

Over view:

Hoober Stand is a personal favourite of mine and is really what started this site going, this is the place where the shape of a person was captured on film stood at the window half way up the building by the webmaster Richard and his daughter one cold night in 2003. (See picture above) The Tower dates back to the 19th century and many stories surround this area including the sighting of a child who is said to wander the woodland area surrounding it. Even to this day many people have reported that witchcraft is taken place quite regular.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold clear but breezy night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The main areas we were concentrating on were the doorway to the tower, the first window on the right hand side of the building and the woodland area surrounding it.

While conducting the vigil at the doorway of the tower, Richard was calling out, when a strange bang seemed to come from inside of the tower, he asked for the noise to repeat itself but no further bangs came from within the building.

A further vigil around the doorway resulted in a strange noise coming from behind the cameraman Wez, again we asked for the noise to repeat but it didn’t. Not long after this voices could be heard which we were unable to hear clearly, but we had to dismiss this due to there being a slight wind and the noises being carried by that from nearby.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left the area around 02:30 hours very cold and a little disappointed with their results of the evening, however, this will still be one of Richards favourite places and I’m sure we’ll be back to try again.

Vigil Locations:

Bedroom 1 (main bedroom), Bedroom 2 (smaller bedroom), Living Room.

Overview

Little is known about this property and searches of local archives have not produced anything substantial.  We know the house was built in the 1920’s but no traces of past residents could be found during our initial investigation.  We do know a child died many years ago who used to live at the property but not actually in the house.  Julie, the home owner is married with 2 children, Zoë and Luke and as lived at the property for many years.  We were told many stories about alleged paranormal activity during our initial interviews with the family.  These include seeing balls of light floating through rooms, various bangs emanating from empty rooms, unexplainable cold spots, voices and full blown apparitions.  Only a few days before the investigation took place Luke, Julie’s son told us he was sat in the living room watching TV when a bold headed ‘old looking’ man popped his head around the kitchen door only to vanish after a few seconds.

The Investigation

We arrived at the property at 21:30 and, after a quick equipment check carried out the baseline tests.  The tests did not reveal anything out of the ordinary until we entered the main bedroom (bedroom 1).  We regularly use a negative Ion detector on our investigations and are currently conducting work based on the theory that negative ions that occur naturally can trigger apparent paranormal activity.  Upon entering the main bedroom nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary until we moved the Ion detector over the marital bed.  The device instantly picked up and registered the presence of negatively charged ion particles but only in this one location, the rest of the room did not give off any readings what so ever.  We found this very interesting as Julie had told us a lot of the activity happens whilst she is in bed; could there be some kind of connection with what we recorded and the activity that was occurring in the house?

After the baseline testing was complete we sat and chatted to the family whilst our 2 mediums, David walked around the house to see what they could pick up on.  Below is a breakdown of their initial findings.

Bedroom 1:

Both mediums picked up on the presence of a man in his late 50’s early 60’s.  He appeared to have a ‘drawn’ grey face, 5 feet 10 inch in height with sunken eyes and silver/black hair.  The man had severe chest pain and found it very difficult to breath.  He was suffering from some kind of lung disease and the pain went from the top of the chest all the way down to the stomach on the right hand side of the body.  The man had suffered for a long time but the last 3 months of his life would have been very intense pain wise.

Bedroom 2:

Nothing was initially picked up in bedroom 2

Stairs:

In this area our mediums picked up on what appeared initially to be some kind of struggle.  This was later discovered to be a person struggling on the stairs rather than a struggle between 2 or more people.  A great feeling of fear and panic could also be felt along with an overwhelming desire to ‘get out’.  They felt that these feelings were coming from the presence in bedroom 1 and they ‘saw’ that he had to crawl downstairs using his left hand to steady him.  They also felt that the gentleman from bedroom 1 had collapsed at the bottom of the stairs in front of the main door.  This was confirmed by the family as something they had also felt.

Living Room:

No initial feelings could be picked up in this location although David felt that the spirit would try and ‘feed’ off the electrical appliances in the room to give him energy.  Electrical interference was a common occurrence according to the family.

Kitchen:

This room had a feeling of happier times and both mediums agreed that the energy in this location was residual.  They got the impression of a man who worked hard all his life.  He would often stand in the kitchen area and stretch his back whilst holding the base of his spine with his hands.  They felt the man was involved in manual/industrial work, perhaps oil or steel.  There is a steel foundry a few miles away from the property, could this be a connection?

After the mediums had finished their session we setup our experiments and split into 2 teams.  Team one consisted of Gary, Paul and David who were joined by Julie, team 2 consisted of Richard, Neil and Joe who were joined by Zoë and Luke.  With everything in place we headed upstairs to begin our first vigil.

Vigil 1 – Team 1 – Bedroom 1

The time was now 23:35 and the first vigil was scheduled to last one hour.  Once we were sitting comfortably we quietly tried to tune in to the atmosphere and see what we could pick up on.  At first, nothing was coming through but after approximately 15 minutes Paul saw a series of small lights moving over the bed.  These aerial anomalies were also confirmed by Julie and we were told they are a regular occurrence.   Movement was then detected by the entire group in the corner of the bedroom between the wall and the right hand window.  What this movement was is unclear as nothing was responding to the questions we were asking.  Dave came up with a name for the gentleman he picked up on earlier in the evening as being ‘Frank’ but he was also picking up on a ‘Fletcher’.  Whether these two names are linked in any way is also unclear at the time of writing.  ‘Frank’ seemed to be confused by something, as if he was unsure why we were there in his bedroom.  As Dave was making these revelation a cold feeling hit the air and both Paul and Dave said someone had just entered the room.  Who this ‘someone’ was we can’t be sure of but Dave told us his head felt very heavy all of a sudden and he was also being bombarded with the name ‘Dawn’.

We again tried to ask out questions to see if we could get any response from whoever was in the room with us.  This time we all heard a succession of small taps emanating from the corner of the bedroom as a direct response to our questions.  When we asked for this ‘sign’ to be repeated we once again heard the same tapping noise.  Nothing further came through during this session except for more movement near the main door.  It was at this stage we decided to end our first session and regroup with the other team

Vigil 1 – Team 2 – Bedroom 2

As always, the session was started with everyone sitting in silence for several minutes to see what they could pick up on.  Both mediums felt that bedroom 2 felt much ‘lighter’ than the main bedroom but was still somehow connected with the gentleman they picked up on earlier.  After several minutes David became interested in a picture that was hanging on the wall of the bedroom.  He felt that the picture would often be moved by ’someone’ as though they were trying unsuccessfully to re-align it.  This was confirmed by the family but they had always put it down to someone knocking it by mistake.  The group decided to try calling out to see if anything would come through.  As they were asking for a ‘sign’ 4 out of the 5 members of the group all developed severe stomach pains at the same time in the same area of the body.  David said this pain was a residual feeling from the gentleman who used to live here and would have been similar to what he had suffered from for most of his final years.  David then said he felt as if his legs were very weak and he was unable to stand.  He also began to feel very sick and, at the same time, Zoë said she felt like she wanted to cry but had no explanation as to why this was.  Unusual, overwhelming emotions are another common phenomenon in the property and are experienced in most rooms.

The session was going well and the group once again started to call out to see if they could get a response.  David told the group how he had the feeling of someone touching his hair but when asked if this ‘sign’ could be repeated nothing further came through.  David got the psychic impression that this smaller bedroom belonged to the gentleman’s wife.  He felt that the movement often experienced in the house was due to the fact the man came from one bedroom to another in search of his wife, constantly looking for her.  The gentleman was very hard working and could not understand where his wife had gone.  During these revelations several ‘orbs’ were witnessed by the group next to Zoë’s bed but after this, nothing further came through.

Vigil 2 – Team 1 – Bedroom 2

The time was now 01:05 and this second session was due to run until 02:05.  As on every investigation nothing had been discussed between the 2 groups so anything we did experience wouldn’t be preconceived.  After we had been sitting quietly for several minutes Dave came up with the name ‘Beth’ or ‘Bethany’.  This was confirmed by Julie who told us Zoë had come up with the name a couple of weeks ago.  After a few moments both Dave and Paul saw what appeared to be a female’s face by the main doorway.  She was described as being 23 years old, rounded face, very defined cheek bones and slim.  She had brown hair with hints of red in it and had it tied back in a ‘bob’ style.  After this description was announced Julie told us once again that Zoë had given a very similar description previously.  The female visitor was also described as being around 5 foot 1 inch in height and had a feminine but ‘boyish’ charm about her.

In the same area this woman had been seen several flashes and lights were witnessed by the group which seemed to grow in intensity the more we spoke about who this woman could be.  Dave felt that the female was the same woman who had lived here previously and was the wife to the gentleman in Bedroom 1.  The images Dave was getting though were from a much earlier time when the woman was much younger.  The next description Dave came up with holds a very interesting story.  He described how this woman, possibly called ‘Elizabeth’ would appear in a long, flowing dress but, strangely enough, be wearing pit boots which were slightly hidden by the bottom of her clothes.  What is interesting about this statement is Luke used to play with an imaginary girl when he was young who matched the description exactly; could there be some kind of connection with what we were now seeing?

With nothing more coming through we decided to end the session and make our way to the living room for the final vigil of the evening.

Vigil 2 – Team 2 – Bedroom 1

This session started as always with the group sitting in silence for several minutes trying to get connected with the atmosphere.  Almost immediately the medium felt as if he was ‘going under’, a term used by mediums to describe going into a trance like state.  He had to fight hard to keep himself from being taken over but the rest of group described some startling changes in their appearance.  They said he looked physically different, his facial features had seemingly altered, his hair line came down to a point in the centre of his forehead and he developed dark patches on his face.  Just what the group were witnessing is open to interpretation but David tells us he felt as if he was being ‘pulled’ towards the front bedroom window.  His hair changed for a second time during this bizarre incident where as before his hairline came to a point it was now appearing to be pulled back across his scalp.

After this odd phenomenon had subsided the team relaxed and tried to communicate with the spirit which was seemingly present.  Zoë told the group she had a ‘tingling’ sensation in both her legs but this could not be explained away by the position she was sat in.  At this time David also heard a male voice saying “Go away and die!”  Richard was next to try and get a reaction so began asking out questions for a ‘sign’ to be given.  At first nothing was happening so Richard asked for the wardrobe door to be opened as an indication something was there.  Amazingly the wardrobe door did start to open but only by a few centimetres.  This, some would say is no indication at all that something ‘other-worldly’ was playing any part in the movement but it only happened the once and as a direct result of the question being asked.

The room seemed to quiet for a while after this incident but then Richard began to pick up on a female spirit.  He described the woman as being tall with tight, pulled back hair in a ‘bun’ style (not the similarity with David’s description and remember no one had spoken about what we had discovered during the night).  The Medium also felt that the woman was a very cruel person who might have had something to do with illegal abortions.  We have not as yet found any trace of who this woman could be but we will continue to search.  It was also noted that this woman liked to ‘play God’; she decided who lived or died.  She was aware she was dead but was trying to find a way back to this atmosphere so she could carry on he4r ‘power trip’.  The Medium sensed she was a nurse who enjoyed inflicting pain on others.  While this information was being given Zoë heard what can only be described as a ‘laughing’ sound coming from somewhere in the room.  With activity stopping as quickly as it had started the group decided to end the session.

Vigil 3 – Team 1 & 2 – Living Room

We decided to conduct a joint vigil for the final session and try some glass divination experiments.  We positioned ourselves around the family’s coffee table and began the session to try and get the glass to move.  Nothing at all was coming through but we persevered for over 30 minutes until finally the glass began to move very slightly.  After a few seconds of very slight movement we decided to call an end to the session.  The slight movement will probably have been down to our own unconscious muscle spasms and nothing seemed to want to come through, both mediums also noted how ‘flat’ the house had become since moving downstairs.  The only significant activity we recorded during this final session was some banging noises coming from the kitchen area which happened sporadically throughout the glass moving session.

Ulley Reservoir Ulley Rotherham

Temperature reading: 6.0 Degrees Centigrade

Investigators: Richard, Joe

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Night Vision Camcorders, Digital Voice Recorder, Thermometer, Torches.

Experiments: None

Overview:

During the late 19th century conditions in asylums were poor. The patients were treated brutally, by having what was considered to be ground braking experiments conducted upon them. However this made their conditions much worse. A ghost is alleged to haunt the bridge at Ulley reservoir of a psychopath who escaped from a local lunatic asylum in the early 1900s. He apparently killed himself by falling from the bridge into the reservoir and drowning, the spirit of him is said to be seen running around the roads and paths right up until this day.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a cold night, the skies were clear and the moon was shining lighting the bridge up making it ideal conditions to work in.

We had taken 2 cars with us and 2 lots of equipment, so we decided that I (Richard) would park at one end of the bridge with the camera pointing across it towards Joe and Joe would park at the other end of the bridge with his camera and have it pointing at me. We had walky-talkies to talk to each other throughout the investigation.

By the time we had finished setting up and chatting it was gone 11:00 so we set the cameras to record and waited in our cars.

I sat watching across the bridge most of the night and nothing happened, so I decided to pack up about 6:00am as daylight was breaking.

I looked across the bridge and could see a figure approaching me, thinking it was Joe I carried on packing away the equipment. I put everything in the boot of the car and slammed it shut! Then thought to myself, where’s Joe?

Thinking he’d seen me packing away, thought he must have gone back to his car to do the same. So I jumped in my car and drove over the bridge to Joes. As I approached I could see Joe in the drivers seat, what I thought pretending to be asleep! I knocked on the window and Joe startled woke up! I said, “very funny Joe, I saw you walking across the bridge! He said, what do you mean, I must have fallen asleep a while since.

It then suddenly dawned on me that it wasn’t Joe crossing the bridge, but who was it? I went to the camera that Joe had locked off hoping to see what it was, but unfortunately the battery had died around 60 minutes earlier.

Returning home we vowed to check all the footage we had record that night to see if anything had been caught on tape. However after reviewing over 11 hours of footage nothing was to be seen!

Conclusion:

Very disappointed that we didn’t catch anything on tape, but will keep going to the location to see if we can witness the strange figure I saw again. I know that I did see a person walking across the bridge, but to this day, I can’t understand who are what it was…..

The Old Coaching Inn Sheffield

Location: Coaching Inn, Sheffield

Date: 12 January 2008

Time: 2315 Hours

E.M.F. Reading: 0.0

Temperature reading: 3.0 Degrees Centigrade

Investigators: Richard, Mike

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Night Vision Camcorders, Thermometer, Torches.

Experiments: None

Overview:

The Old Coaching Inn is based on the outskirts of Sheffield, The location will be kept secret to prevent people visiting it due to the bad state of repair it is in.

The Inn was one of Richard favorite places and previously it as never let him down on paranormal activity. Sightings have been seen of a man wondering around on an old stairway along with footsteps coming from an upstairs room.

The building as very limited access now and you can only get in to the first room of the smallest building due to the damage caused by vandals and the natural elements.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a cold night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The only area we could investigate was the first room as you enter the smallest building and the stairway which leads to nowhere, now the upper floors have collapsed.

Nothing much seemed to be happening until, we heard what we could only describe as a man crying out. (This was caught on film!) The team went outside to have a look to see if there was anyone hanging around, but could see or hear anyone. The noises continued on for a while and then stopped.

Mike also heard what he describes as a shuffling noise in the upstairs room, but after reviewing the tape we were unable to hear it.

Nothing much else seemed to happen, but after reviewing the tape upon returning home, we noticed that there was a mist appeared on the camera. This wasn’t noticed at the time by Richard who was holding the camcorder at the time and no other mists were caught during the evenings filming.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left the Old Coaching Inn around 1240 hours a little disappointed with their results of the evening.

Once we returned to the car, we decided to look around the area a little more to see if we could discover what was making the noises we were hearing earlier. Upon looking over a gate, we discover that there was a cow making some very strange noises in the field!

We couldn’t explain the shuffling that Mike heard upstairs, but it could have been some small animal a tree brushing up against the building.

After reviewing the tapes back, we did notice that there was a mist appearing on the screen. We can confirm that none of the other footage we took that night had a mist on, but due to the weather being quite cold, it could have been the cameraman’s breath.

The old coaching inn is still a great place to investigate, but is very dangerous due to structural damage. The Rotherham-ghosts team have kept the location secret to prevent people going there and causing themselves an injury. Please do not email us for the directions as they won’t be disclosed for your safety.

Over view:

Stocksbridge bypass was constructed in the 1980s and as created media interest throughout its time, due to some of the strange goings on that have occurred. Police also have reported that a figure and strange bangs were heard while doing their vigil up there after receiving a number of reports from workmen saying they had witnessed strange happenings.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold and windy night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The main areas we were concentrating on were the Peroyd Bridge and the pylon area, the road running under Peroyd bridge..

We started the first vigil while sat in the car on Peroyd bridge, because this is where the police officers witnessed the strange banging’s and figure stood at the car window. However, due to high winds we had to dismiss any noises and movements the car was making.

A further vigil took place around the pylon area, to see if we could hear the reported singing that as been heard, again due to the adverse weather it was difficult to hear anything out of the ordinary. We did hear voices and shouting, but had to dismiss this due to revellers coming out of the public house in the valley and the possibly of the wind carrying their voices.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left the area around 0210hours a little disappointed with their results of the evening. However, we do intend on visiting this location again when the weather is better. For another try.

Cadeby Tunnel Cadeby Doncaster

Experiments: Calling of name Mexborough Ragger 3 times

Over view:

A young girl (know as the Mexborough Ragger) is said to have been walking through a tunnel taking water to the quarry when a train hit her. There is an archway in the tunnel wall, which you can sit in, then you say her name 3 times and she reappears walking through the tunnel.

Only a few people have been in contact with the white lady. We went to try and get her to appear for us!

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold clear but windy night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

We all entered the tunnel a little apprehensive but eager to see if we would see anything or witness anything out of the ordinary.

The main areas we were concentrating on were the archways situated in the tunnel, there are 5 of these and it’s said to be the middle one where you call her name and she appears.

We walked the full length of the tunnel first to familiarise ourselves with the layout and to try and track down the middle arch way. As we were walking back down the tunnel towards the middle arch way and loud clunking noise could be heard for the arched area. We approached the arch but were unable to recreate the noise that we had heard.

Joe and Myself (Richard) felt a little strange in the tunnel and nervous about calling out the name, Mexborough Ragger 3 times, so Wez being a sceptic stood in the archway and called her name out. He repeated this prompt several times, but unfortunately she didn’t appear. But Joe did see an orb appear on the archway of the tunnel but had to dismiss the fact that paint was peeling off and it could have been that what he saw. However, it was noticed that all 3 of us kept looking towards the far end of the tunnel as though there was something there.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left the area around midnight because the car park we were parked in was closing and we were asked to move the car by security, however, we were quite relieved to be leaving the area anyway due to the feeling of anxiety we felt when entering. This location was very interesting and we certainly plan to return in the future to check the place out again. We all felt that we weren’t alone in the tunnel and that maybe if we would have had more time to investigate, then maybe something else may have happened.

The Investigations:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold clear but windy night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigils.

It was decided that we would split up into smaller groups and so that we could conduct separate investigations along with group ones, this enabled us to cover more of the castle.

The main areas we were concentrating on were the Entrance level, The Lords Chamber and Chapel and the Lords Hall. Due to severe winds and cold weather, it was decided that the battlements would not be covered during the investigation process.

Haunted Yorkshire and the team can confirm that the rest of the group were in the visitors center at the time of Mike making this film!!

Conclusion:

We left the area around 03.00 as their time there had come to an end. This location was a very interesting place to investigate by the team and I think an interesting night was had by all of us.

Over 7 hours of video footage were taken that evening and many of the strange happenings that we experience on the night were unfortunately not all caught on video tape.

Some of these included the lights at one point going out completely for no reason at all. After informing the staff member of the castle who was in the visitors centre at the time. He confirmed that the lights were timed to be on continuously during the night and couldn't explain the reason for this taking place. Also a dark shadow was seen pass the doorway of the chapel, but again this was not caught on video tape.

One last thing to add, Richard was the last investigator to join the group on the evening of the investigation so he headed off up to the castle to meet the rest of the team, as he climbed the stairs and entered the lords chamber he saw a pair of legs disappear up the opposite stairwell. Frozen to the spot he telephoned one of the other group members who confirmed that they were all on the roof and had been for a while. As the rest of the team came down from the roof to meet Richard heavy footsteps from the team could be heard from the wooded floors above. There was no way some one could have run up the stone steps and got across the floor without Richard hearing them.

Haunted Yorkshire would like to thank the staff at Conisbrough castle for their hospitality and look forward to returning again in the future.

Experiments

We set up 2 experiments during the investigation.  The first was a trigger object (child toy) in Room 1 with a locked off camcorder and the second was a Dictaphone for EVP recordings in Bedroom 2.

Overview

Little is known about this property and searches of local archives have not produced anything substantial.  Mexborough Historical Society as also tried to search for any records but drew almost a total blank.  We do know that the house was built in 1906 and was originally a set of 4 town houses, the latter 2 being demolished over a decade ago.  The 2 remaining properties (both now owned by the same person) have been passed through many hands over the last 100 years and have, at one time or another, been business premises as well as private dwellings.  The house we are to concentrate on during the investigation is number 188.  This is currently being completely renovated and, according to the owner, is very active.  The house next door also as apparent paranormal activity occurring but seems on a much smaller scale than number 188.  We did learn that the house had previously been on fire when squatters had lived there and we also picked up on a very odd local myth regarding the place.  We were told by a local Mexborough resident that when he was a child he was told by his parents not to play near the house as the ‘Reverend’ would come and get him.  This story would later take on a whole new meaning during the investigation.  We did manage to trace some previous owners through the land records so if our mediums did come up with any names connected to the property we had a good chance of backing them up historically.

The owner had gone over the paranormal events in great detail over a period of 2 weeks prior to us going in.  The activity included loud bangs, stone throwing, electrical equipment taking on a life of their own, various items being moved around and, on at least 2 occasions, full apparitions.

The Investigation

We arrived at the venue at 10pm and started the session by having a cup of tea with the owner whilst he recounted some more stories of his experiences.  His wife had also experienced some of the events he told us about but was not present during the investigation.  For reporting purposes it is worth pointing out that the group’s medium, Dave, was not present during this time.  After a short time we headed next door to number 188 to conduct the baseline tests and to let our medium have a walk around on his own to see what he could pick up and also to aid us in deciding which rooms to concentrate on.  The baseline tests revealed nothing out of the ordinary.  As the whole building was being renovated no mains electricity was connected so the location was very cold, just over 4 degrees Celsius on average.  No EMF readings were made during the initial testing and no other anomalies were recorded.  With all the necessary details taken care of we headed back next door to plan the night and decided what experiments would work best.

During Dave’s initial walk round he had felt the presence of a little girl so we decided to use a child’s toy as a trigger object in the hope that, if there was a child spirit present, she could relate to the toy and we might possibly get some movement.  David also felt that Bedroom 2 would be quite active so a Dictaphone was set up for EVP recordings.  We were unable to conduct a vigil in bedroom 2 as half the floor had been taken up ready for new floorboards to be laid.  Having discussed what Dave had come up with and taking into account what the owner had told us we decided to use the 2 main downstairs rooms and one of the upstairs bedrooms for our vigils.  We decided against the cellar area due to health and safety reasons and, as stated earlier, the other bedroom was out of bounds.  The time was now 11pm and with everything in place we headed back next door to start the investigation.

Vigil 1 – Rooms 1 & 2

We positioned ourselves in various areas around room 1 and tried to make ourselves as comfortable as possible.  We started the vigil by sitting in silence for several minutes to see what we could pick up on and to ‘tune’ in to our new environment.  As rooms 1 & 2 are connected via a large doorway (see plan) we decided to split the vigil and do both rooms together.  The air felt very heavy and oppressive during the first stage of the investigation and the whole area seemed very dark.  The first thing David picked up on was the fact the house had previously been on fire.  This is true and historically traceable but it is worth again pointing out that David had no prior knowledge of the property or its location.  After several minutes David picked up on lots of movement in Room2, this was confirmed by Paul and Richard but nothing was caught on camera.  Then all the group became aware of what sounded like a very loud clock ticking from somewhere in the house.  Everyone with the exception of Neil heard this sound and we were at a loss to explain where it was coming from.  The owner eliminated the idea that it may be coming from his house next door and then, as quickly as it had started, it stopped.  We thought that maybe it was water dripping but there was no rain that night and the ticking kept the same pace/time, literally every second.  As we were discussing what could have caused the anomaly it started again and lasted for a good 20 seconds before once again stopping abruptly.  We searched the property for a possible cause but we found nothing that would make a ticking sound and after that we didn’t hear it again during the session.

More movement was detected in Room 2 so we decided to try calling out to see if anything would happen.  When we asked for a sign a series of loud bangs came from above us in the general direction of Bedroom 1.  We asked that if this was a sign for it to be repeated but nothing more came through.  We didn’t hear anymore banging for the rest of the investigation but on checking we could find no logical reason for anything which could have created the sound.  We continued the vigil and split the group over both rooms.  Richard, Dave and Paul all commented on the amount of movement in Room 2 but again, nothing was caught on camera.  It was at this point that Jane came over feeling very cold and described a strange ‘tingle’ down her left side.  It is worth remembering that the room was very cold and perhaps Jane had been sitting in an awkward position which had given her pins and needles.  The feelings subsided after several minutes but then things began to get even stranger.  Richard, who was stood in Room 2 told us he felt as if his coat had been tugged by someone.  No one was close enough to do this and there was nothing around him which he could have got his coat caught on.  Literally seconds later Dave also said he felt as if his trouser leg had been tugged.  Again, no one was stood close to Dave at this point and there was nothing around him to suggest his trousers had been caught on something.  We were beginning to get a little excited about all the apparent activity in the building when Richard shouted he had seen a huge orb shoot past his face.  No one else witnessed this event and nothing was caught on camera but he was adamant he had seen it.  Richard then told us he had seen a ‘green flash’ of light on the wall at the back of Room 2.  This time both Neil and Paul observed this curious light anomaly but again, nothing was captured on camera.  This first session was proving to be very fruitful and there was more to come.  Another curious light anomaly was witnessed flying around the room and Richard got his coat tugged once again.  David was picking up on a little girl called ‘Emily’ who was ‘with us’ in the room.  No records of this person have been found at the time of writing.  David described how Emily was kept here by a stronger male presence and was very scared of him.  With no further activity we decided to end the first session of the night and head back next door to discuss our findings.

Vigil 2 – Bedroom 1 & Room 2

For the second vigil we decided to split the group so half could cover the upstairs bedrooms and the other half could remain in the seemingly active downstairs rooms.  Bedroom 1 is, according to the owner, the area where most activity occurs and defiantly where most of the banging comes from on a daily basis

Staying upstairs were Gary, Jane, David and Joe whilst Richard, Neil and Paul took the downstairs.  During the vigil nothing out of the ordinary was reported from the Bedroom but downstairs things were once again happening.  Although the group all agreed that the whole feeling of the building had changed since the first session things were still coming through.  The entire atmosphere didn't feel as heavy or foreboding as before but never the less we may have experienced one of our most startling events to date.  Richard in Room 2 was asking for a sign when all of a sudden he got hit on the end of his nose by a large object.  We could not ascertain what the object was but Richard said is felt heavy, was moving very fast and hit him square on the end of his nose.  While this commotion was taking place all the upstairs group came down to see what was happening.  There were no marks on Richard but both Neil and Paul said they had heard something hit the floor when Richard had shouted out in pain.  We instantly began to look for a logical reason as to what may have caused the incident.  The whole property is literally a building site so maybe something had fallen off of the walls at the exact time Richard was asking for a sign.  The room above Room 2 is only partially floor boarded and a clear path to the roof is visible so maybe something fell from the tiles and hit him.  None of the group were convinced of wither of these 2 options.  For Richard to have been hit on the end of the nose the ‘object’ would have had to navigate a series of wooden beams to hit him.  He told us it didn’t ‘drop’ but flew in a horizontal fashion so this again says it couldn't have fallen from the roof or walls.  Perhaps we will never be sure where the object did come from but we are all 100% convinced Richard was hit by something hard and was travelling at quite a pace.  After this incident we decided to end the session and regroup next door to discuss how we would approach the final vigil of the night.

Vigil 3 – Glass Divination Experiment

For the final session of the night we decided to try a glass divination experiment to see what would come through.  We all gathered around the glass to try and build up the energy but nothing was coming through.  After over 10 minutes we were about to give up when the glass did start to move slightly but stopped again soon after with nothing more coming through.  We felt a little let down by his sudden downturn of activity especially when the building seemed so active when we first arrived but this is how investigations go sometimes.  One final thing Dave did pick up on before we left holds significantly more interest than most of the activity we had had that night.  He told us how he had picked up on a male presence who ‘commanded respect’ and who liked to be called ‘reverend’ even though this was not his actually job title.  As mentioned earlier, a local urban legend regarding the house states that ‘you shouldn't play in the house or the reverend will get you’.  Perhaps this is merely coincidence but perhaps there may have been more than a little truth to the tale.

The tunnels run along side the River Don in Conisbrough, a regular Rotherham-ghosts visitor submitted the story through that many years ago, quarry workers lived on the embankment of the River Don in tunnels and caves, due to the nature of the work and regular flooding many people lost their lives down there. So the spirits of lost souls are said to walk the area they once lived and worked.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before entering one of the only remaining tunnels that are down there.

There is only one entrance to the tunnel which looks like an old railway tunnel; this is the tunnel that was reported through for the team to investigate. Inside its about 60foot long and around 12 foot high and wide, the tunnel is very cold and dirty but is sheltered very well from the weather.

We started the first vigil calling out from any known spirit to try and communicate with us. The tunnel was very dark and even our camera equipment was struggling to focus in there. Mike soon saw a Orb appear on film, but later on during the investigation we noticed that there was a large amount of moths hibernating in there, even though they were quite dormant and not flying around, we had to dismiss the orb caught on film.

There was a very strange feeling that we were not alone in the tunnel, but no definite signs of paranormal activity seem to come through to us. The area was so quiet we turn off the cameras and waited patiently for something to happen but nothing out of the ordinary appeared.

After turned the cameras on again, Mike noticed through the view finder of the camcorder that there seemed to be a light shining at the far end, but after investigating this, again it was a moth hanging on to the roof of the tunnel, again the moth was quite dormant covered in dew, which was reflecting the light we were creating from the camera.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left the area around 0300 hours a little disappointed with their results of the evening. But quite satisfied that we had explained the orbs and lights what most people may have concluded as paranormal. However, we do intend on visiting this location again when the weather is better. For another try.

Lowes Stand is just outside Hoyland in Barnsley and was built in 1720, Rotherham-ghosts have received a number of alleged sightings here, including lights coming from the tower and strange mist in the neighbouring grave yard.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold and windy night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The main areas we were concentrating on were the Tower and the grave yard.

We started the first vigil at the tower itself, strange noises could be heard but due to the bad weather we had to dismiss any noises and movements we witnessed.

A further vigil took place in the grave yard, but high winds were preventing us from conducting any form of investigation.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team decided to leave the area around 19:15 hours a little disappointed with their results of the evening. Even though they did hear some strange noises. We do intend on visiting this location again when the weather is better. For another try.

Overview:

Rockleigh Furnace is just outside Hoyland in Barnsley, and Rotherham-ghosts have received a number of alleged sightings here, including a man at work at the furnace itself and local residents reporting strange light coming from the tower.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold and windy night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The main areas we were concentrating on were the Tower and the Furnace just through the woodland area.

We started the first vigil at the furnace itself, where a strange orb was captured on camera, this wasn’t noticed at the time the film was taken. This is the same area where a man walking his dog reported seeing another man at work, “described as from another time”. Due the high winds that evening and the motorway traffic passing close by. It was very difficult to conduct a vigil. so we had to dismiss any noises and movements we witnessed.

A further vigil took place around the in tower, to see if we could see the reported lights that had been seen by the local residents, again due to the adverse weather it and motorway traffic we found it very difficult to pin point any paranormal activity. However, the group did keep seeing a lot of movement outside the doorway of the tower, but again had to dismiss this due to the passing traffic and the head light reflections coming through the woods.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left the area around 0110 hours a little disappointed with their results of the evening. But did see movements and on reviewing their video footage caught a strange orb object on tape. We do intend on visiting this location again when the weather is better. For another try.

Overview

The property was built in 1933 on a bed of coal known as the Melton Field seam.  The family, consisting of mother, daughter and son have lived at the house for approximately 6 years and previous to them owning the house 2 other families have resided there.  Historical records indicate nothing occupied the land previous to the home being built and Barnsley archives have no deaths associated with the house or land before 1944.  Barnsley crematorium does however have 2 deaths recorded from previous occupants who passed away in the 50’s and 60’s.  They did not however die at the house but are buried in the local cemetery.

The family have been having major problems with an alleged spirit since September 2005 but the house as been witness to apparent paranormal activity for a number of years.  Stacey, Karen’s daughter told us the activity seemed to start in her bedroom with subtle breathing sounds being heard and a simple awareness of ‘something being there with her’.  This went on for a number of years but it was not until September 2005 that things took a more sinister turn.  Shadows were seen in all rooms at the property, people described being touched by icy cold hands, cool breezes were felt and doors shut or rattled on their own.  Everyday objects began to vanish and turn up days later in odd places, silver ‘sparks’ were witnessed in various rooms and ‘orbs’, visible to the naked eye were seen floating around the house.  Electrical equipment also began to take on a life of its own.  The radio would turn itself on and off at random, all manner of electrical faults sprang up around the house and kitchen appliances broke down nearly every over week.  The cats appeared to ‘sense’ something in certain rooms and would watch something which was invisible to the rest of the family move around the room, tall dark imposing shadows would been seen standing in the corner of bedrooms and, most worryingly of all, Karen would wake up in the morning covered in bruises and scratches with no explanation as to how she got them.  Karen had a medium around to the home before getting in touch with us.  She was told the house had 5 spirits currently residing in it, 4 were of the more ‘friendly’ persuasion whilst the last one was very negative.

The Investigation

We arrived at the property at approximately 21:30 and introduced the rest of the team to the family.  As always, our 2 mediums did not know any information about the home, its location or anything Karen had previously told us regarding the activity.  Neil and Richard set off to conduct the baseline tests whilst David started their walk around the house to see what he could pick up on.  Gary and Paul stayed with Karen and her family to explain fully what would happen during the investigation and to prepare them for what we may uncover.  It was during the baseline tests that we got our first taste of something we couldn’t explain.  In the main living room the EMF meter was picking up a reading over the fireplace.  We confirmed with the family that the fire was gas, not electric so perhaps there possibly could have been some cable behind the wall.  Karen told us that the fireplace is one of the main areas where activity occurs and, almost as soon as she had finished her sentence the EMF meter began to ‘pulse.  It had a steady 1mg reading but every 3 seconds it would jump to 3mg and then go back down to 1mg.  Our initial thoughts were that the meter may be faulty or the battery could have drained so we brought out a new meter which did exactly the same.  Both EMF meters were now sat on top of the fireplace pulsing from 1mg up to 3mg and back again.  This continued for several minutes until both meters began to read a steady 1mg.  We moved the instruments away from the area and the EMF went flat with no readings being present.  Once they were placed back in the area they again started to rhythmically pulse.  We then thought that perhaps there was some wiring with was loose or faulty so we decided to kill the power in the whole house.  With no electricity running anywhere in the property we once again put the EMF meters back on the fireplace only to witness them doing exactly the same thing.  With the power back on we talked about what could be making this happen and, suddenly, both meters stopped and the odd phenomena seemed to have vanished.  We went back into the kitchen area for a final equipment check but as we were getting everything ready both meters started gain but this time were pulsing from 1mg to 3mg then jumping right off the scale and reading over 10mg.  This, like before, continued for several minutes until again stopping.  We are still at a loss to explain what may have been causing this.

Below is a breakdown of what David initially picked up on during their walk round:

Main Bedroom (Bedroom 1)

David initially thought that the bedroom held some kind of ‘vortex’ or ‘opening’ from which spirits could pass through to this world.  He felt the area leading to the on-suite bathroom and loft hatch served as a path for spirits to walk between ‘atmospheres’.  Both mediums had a feeling of ‘wanting to go up’ and they both agreed that 4 or 5 spirits were in regular visitation here although none of them were grounded.  They felt that the room had an odd ‘heavy’ feeling to it and sensed great frustration and confusion.  David came up with the name Eddie.  Could they have picked up on the past owner of the property Edwin Guest?

Smaller Bedroom (Bedroom 2)

David instantly picked up on a small child in this room who was approximately 6 years in age.  He also heard a knocking on the bedside table at the same time the shirt was being pulled.  He felt that the boy was worried but also excited and had a sense of urgency about him.  David felt that the boy was also connected to the family, not to the property.  He also heard what appeared to be a breathing sound coming from the bed.  The breathing sounded ‘snotty’ or ‘stuffy’; this was also confirmed by Stacy who had heard the same sound many times before.

Bathroom

David picked up on the fact that when the family were getting washed at the bathroom basin they would have seen movement and/or faces in the bathroom mirror; this was confirmed by Karen.  He also got a sense of ‘blood’ and ‘gore’ associated with the bathroom but could not figure out why this was so.  He also picked up on the wind chimes that hang from the bathroom ceiling.  He told us that from time to time the family would hear these chiming even though no one was in the area at the time, this was also confirmed.

Adams Room

Adam, Karen’s son had told us he doesn’t generally see or feel anything untoward in his room, our mediums were unaware of this fact.  On entering the area David confirmed that the room was a ‘safe area’, as if the location was ‘shut off’ from the rest of the house.

Living Room

Again, David didn’t pick up on anything specific in this area except that the room had a ‘unwell’ feeling to it.  He described the area as being ‘heavy’ and that the stairs had a ‘dark, foreboding’ feeling to them.

With everything completed it was time to start the investigation.  Group 1 would consist of Gary, Paul, David, Karen and her partner while Group 2 would consist of Richard, Neil, Joe, Stacy and Luke.

Vigil 1 – Group 1 – Main Bedroom

As always the group made themselves comfortable in the vigil location and tried to get a feel for the room.  Almost instantly we all heard a small ‘tapping’ sound coming from the archway which separates the bedroom from the on-suite bathroom.  Gary was sitting in this location and as the tapping sounds were heard both Paul and Karen said they could see small flashes of light emanating from the area and above Gary’s head.  Paul, who was located at the back of the bedroom near the window described how he could see movement coming from around the bed area and could also see what appeared to be ‘swirls’ of smoke above the bed.  This phenomenon was not captured on our equipment though but Karen also said she could see the same thing, almost as if a faint mist had descended over the bed area.  David told us he could see a dark shadow crawling around the floor approximately 1foot in height.  He thought that this could have been a cat or a small animal of some kind and as he was telling us this he felt something touch him on his back although there was nothing behind him except a wall.  The activity seemed to be getting more and more regular as no sooner did Dave say he was touched but a shaft of light was observed coming from the archway which separates the bedroom from the bathroom.  David said he was picking up on the name Joseph but seemed unable to get any further information regarding the gentleman.

The activity ceased for several minutes so we did a quick sweep of the room with our equipment.  The temperature had not changed but the EMF meter did begin to tick gently where we had zero readings earlier.  This didn’t continue for long though but suddenly, Karen begun to cry for seemingly no reason at all.  She told us she had felt herself get touched whilst lying on the bed and at the same time, Paul described how he felt like someone had literally just walked through him.  Karen continued to sob during this time and then the bedside lamp flashed on and off on its own.  Karen told us this was a regular phenomenon and sometimes happened when the light was unplugged.  It was at this point in the vigil that the group heard what sounded like high pitched laughter emanating from somewhere within the room.  We could not explain where this could be coming from naturally so we tried calling out to see if the noise would come again.  It didn’t but, once again Karen began to cry and was at a loss to explain why she was doing so.  At this point we felt it appropriate to end the session and made our way downstairs to meet the other group.

Vigil 1 – Group 2 – Smaller Bedroom

Group two decided to start the night in the smaller bedroom which is used by Stacey, Karen’s daughter.  This is the bedroom both mediums felt was the most active and also the room we were told the activity started in.  The group settled themselves down and tried to ‘tune in’ to the new surroundings.  At first, all was quiet and a series of spoken questions provided no response.  Adam, Karen’s son was the first to witness anything unusual.  Adam generally doesn’t experience much in the house, nothing compared to what the others do but he saw a series of lights on the far wall.  The bedroom does face the main road but he insisted it was not the light a car would make as it passed the house.

Richard continued to call out to try and get a reaction from whatever may have been with them in the room and all the group heard a bang which seemed to come from somewhere inside the bedroom although its exact location could not be found.  Richard at this point began to feel very drained and ‘unnaturally tired’ and described the experience like ‘someone drawing all of his energy away from him in one go’.  Regardless, the group pressed on with the vigil until Stacey felt her finger being ‘tugged’ by unseen hands.  David then began to see movement around the wall area of the room so went over the area to see what it could be.  He immediately felt a cold spot in the area he saw the movement and began to follow it around the area as it moved from one location to another.  The temperature was reading 3 degrees lower in this area than the rest of the room but no drafts could be felt coming from the window or from under the door; what was causing this phenomenon remains a mystery.  After the temperature drops had been recorded the room seemed to go ‘flat’ for several minutes and calling out produced no results.  David then started to feel the presence of something coming in and out of the room very quickly.  He felt that this ‘entity’ walked from Karen’s room, across the landing and into Stacey’s room, moved around the location and simply walked back out of the door, forever repeating the process.  This could be one possible explanation as to why Karen and Stacey report most of the activity in the property but who was this ‘spirit’ and what did it want?  After this revelation the room seemed to come alive and the whole group reported lots of movement around the location.  Shadows were seen by everyone darting around the place and light formations were also witnessed.  I would like to point out at this time though that nothing was captured on either digital camera or night vision camcorder so what this movement was will perhaps never be known.  Whilst the movement was being experienced, David picked up on part of a name.  He felt the name ended in ‘EN’ but couldn’t lock on to what the rest was.  Without any further information regarding this name it is impossible to trace back through the historical records.  The group decided to end the session at this point and joined group 1 downstairs.

Vigil 2 – Group 1 – Smaller Bedroom

As usual, nothing was discussed regarding what each group experienced so we had no idea what to expect from the location.  We made ourselves comfortable and began the vigil as normal.  The room felt incredibly ‘flat’ and nothing like it had felt during the baseline tests and medium walk round.  We tried calling out but nothing came through and David said he felt that whatever may have been here earlier was certainly not here now.  Karen also said how ‘different’ the room felt compared to normal as she generally doesn’t like being in it.  We persevered with the session for 45 minutes but didn’t experience one single thing during our time in the location.  Paul did say he saw a shadow come across the door but this may have been due to the tree in the front garden blowing in the breeze.  With the room feeling totally ‘flat’ we called an end to the session.

Vigil 2 – Group 2 – Main Bedroom

The second session started at 01:00 as would run until 02:00 with group 2 now covering the main bedroom area.  Again, it was Adam who had the first experience of the vigil almost as soon as the group had made themselves comfortable.  He described a series of ‘flashes’ coming from above Joe’s head as he tried to ‘tune in’ to the atmosphere.  He also said he could see flashes of light above Richards head although both team members didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary during this time.  The whole group said they could see what appeared to be movement in the back section of the bedroom near the on-suite bathroom but again, nothing was captured on our equipment.  Just as Richard had felt drained in the last location, David now told the team he felt very tired all of a sudden as though something was ‘feeding from his energy’.  This was followed by a smell which appeared from nowhere which the group described as being ‘sulphurous’.

The group decided to try calling out to see if they could get any activity; they were not disappointed.  The main bedroom door was closed so the group asked if the ‘spirit’ could perhaps open the door or knock on it.  Amazingly, the door did begin to open and a small ‘tapping’ sound could be heard coming from outside.  The door continued to move slightly so Neil turned on his torch to confirm that the door had actually swung open; it had definitely moved from its closed position seemingly as a direct response from being asked to do so.  David then picked up on the name ‘Tony Jacks’ but no trace of who this person was could be found in connection to the property.   With activity appearing to be on the increase the group asked out to see if the ‘spirit’ would play a game of ‘tig’.  After this was asked both Adam and Neil felt like they had been touched but no one was anywhere near them at the time.  Almost at the same time as Adam and Neil felt the ‘touching’ sensation David also felt what he described as a ‘small hand’ pressing on his shoulder.  The rest of the group witness his shirt seemingly moving on its own as he was telling the group what he felt.  He said he felt very cold and when various team members touched the area he felt the ‘hand’ it did feel cooler compared to the rest of his body.  The group pressed on and continued to ask for more signs if something was in the room with them.  The floorboards in the back part of the bedroom did begin to creak like ‘someone was walking on them’ but this may have been coincidence and nothing more than natural ‘house’ noise.

Vigil 3 – Living Room

The final session of the night was conducted in the main living room where we had the odd EMF readings earlier in the night and also where the family experience a lot of the activity.  Once again, the room felt very ‘flat’ and no activity was recorded during the session.  We conducted various EMF experiments during the vigil in the same area we had had the readings earlier but nothing at all was registering this time.  The readings we did get at the start of the night were very odd and we found it stranger that this time no readings were recorded.  If the EMF was from some natural source like a faulty wire or an appliance which wasn’t earthed surely it would still be giving off the same levels as nothing had been altered from earlier.  No plugs had been taken out; no electrical equipment had been turned off.  Everything was the same as it was during the baseline tests but now the meter was flat.

With the final session over we collected our equipment and discussed our findings with Karen and her family.  We went through some exercises with her so she could try and ‘close down’ if she experienced any further activity and since our visit she as not witnessed hardly any strange goings on.  She did tell us she wanted whatever was in her house to be gone so we have arranged for a member of the spiritualist church to perform a ‘clearing’ on the property and make whatever may be there ‘pass over’ and leave the family in peace.

The Rotherham Paranormal team were called in to this location by the owner of the property, who stated that they were having strange phenomena taking place during trading hours, such as black balls of light appearing from the cellar, people being touched and their cloths being pulled while in the shop along with strange noise coming from the cellar. The age of the building was unknown, but the owners thought is was built around the 18 hundreds. There as been a lot of structural changes to the building which included the second floor and attic space completely sealed off from the rest of the building, as well as the cellar area having a wall bricked up to where the old cellar steps used to go down. Behind the wall, the owner believed it to be a void space. The owners were genuinely spooked by the whole experience.

The walk around

Upon arriving at the location Joe and Richard conducted there usual walk around the building and discussing the strange happenings with the owners.

Investigation 1. Cellar room 3

It was decided that they would conduct the majority of the investigation in the cellar area, due to being disturbed by noise from local bars and pubs on the ground floor. During the walk around, Joe and Richard were in the cellar, when they heard a noise which sounded like a screw or nail being thrown at them. Upon searching the area they found a small screw about half an inch long on the floor, it seemed to have come from the stair well to the cellar.

Joe decided to try out the EMF meter to see if there would be any changes in the readings from the base line test of  0.2, upon moving the machine near the wall in the far corner of the cellar, the meter started to read off the scale. This had not happened originally, we decided to leave the meter running and lock a camera off on it to see if we could capture anything on film. The camcorder was left running for almost an hour until the EMF meter stopped as strangely as it had started. Upon reviewing the video footage when we got home there was nothing caught on the tape that could explain what had happened or why the meter had gone off in the first place?

Investigation 2. Cellar room 1&2

While the EMF experiment was taking place they decided to conduct a further investigation in one of the other cellar rooms with the owners of the shop. Reports of dark shapes and a feeling of not being alone had been felt down there by a number of people. During the investigation, both Joe and Richard did some calling out to try and communicate with anyone that may have been there. However, the only things that they encountered, was some dark shapes that where moving around in one far corner, again they tried to tape this on their night vision camcorder, but after reviewing the footage at a later date, nothing was caught of the video recording.

Investigation 3. Return to cellar room 3

Joe and Richard both decided that a further investigation of cellar 3 would more than likely be the best option to capture something on film. The feeling in this room was quite oppressive and both of them felt as though they didn't want to be alone in there.

Joe decided that he would try some more equipment and experiments, so we chose to use the digital voice recorder and the boom mic to try and capture some E.V.P.s. After setting the equipment up to record, Joe was calling out near the wall where the void room was, after several attempts of communicating, Joe asked again ‘Is there anybody there’ for which a voice replied “YESSSSSSSS” this could be clearly heard by all of the group and was caught on the voice recorder and the camera that was filing at the time. This shook everyone up at the shear volume this came through on the recorder. It was decided then that we would take a break as the owners of the property were quite shaken by this and to decide what we would do next.

Investigation 4. Return to the cellar room 3, part 2

After calming the owners of the property down and discussing what we heard and had caught on the video and recording device, Richard decided to try the same experiment that Joe had done to see if he could get the same response Joe had got about 30 minutes before. Richard proceeded to repeat exactly what Joe had done and ask if there was anyone there?

Richard was getting some form of a response, but we couldn't hear exactly what it was that was coming through the machine. Only when we got back home and listened more careful to the recording that you can hear the voice responding to Richard again by saying YESSSSSSS, along with responding to him with the name of SAM when he asked for a name.

Conclusion

Richard and Joe decided to stop the investigation for the evening and bring back more team members to conduct a further investigation to see if they could get a repeat of what had happened to that that night. Both of them were quite impressed with what had happened to them all during the investigation and agreed that something paranormal had taken place.

In addition to the investigations.

Just before the cameras were turned on to record the end of the video report, Richard felt quite unnerved near the doorway so decided to move away, only to his shock something grabbed hold of his coat. Unfortunately this didn’t get caught on film.

The Return July 2008

The Rotherham Paranormal team did return again 3 weeks later to conduct a further investigation with the rest of the team, but unfortunately nothing happened on this investigation to make a report on the website, this just goes to show that paranormal activity cannot predicted in any way and things only happen when they want to happen.

The Rotherham Paranormal team would like thank the owners of the property for letting us investigate their property and their hospitality, we can also confirm that the paranormal activity they were experiencing as since stopped and no further reports have been made….

The first part the building was opened in 1904 and completed about 1908.  It was then known as ‘Storthes Hall Asylum’.  It was fairly modern in comparison with many other hospitals which had previously been built. But in the 1980s the Hospital was to close its doors for the last time.

Rumors have it that the demolition company brought in to bring the hospital down to ground level, failed to do so after machinery mysteriously started to fail, so the building was left in it’s current state.

Other stories include a patient who allegedly murdered a nurse of the first floor and a figure of a man who wonders around the ground floor.

Now in 2007 the building is in a state of disrepair and the only visitors it gets now is the odd vandal and paranormal investigator.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a warm clear night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The main areas we were concentrating on were the main entrance hall where on previous visits a member of the group saw the figure of a man, whom disappeared through a doorway along with the upstairs corridor where the alleged murder took place.

While conducting the vigil at the man entrance, Mike had gone back to the car to collect some more equipment. This left Joe and Richard to start the investigation. Richard started to call out when all of a sudden the torch he was holding was knocked out of his hand for which he described as similar to an electric shock. We have been unable to explain why this happened or what caused it.

Richard and Joe went outside after this ordeal and Mike decided to go in alone with a camcorder. Whilst inside, Mike witnessed a number of bangs and a black object fly across the screen. After reviewing the video the team seem to think that the black object may have been a bat, but have been unable to explain the 2 bangs.

A further vigil took the team upstairs on to the main corridor, Mike was filming when he saw what he described as an arm poking through one of the doors further down the corridor through the view finder. Upon investigating this there was no explanation for the object seen. (Please see video footage)

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left Storthes Hall around 02:30 hours, quite surprised at the amount of activity that they seem to have witnessed during the night. The team hopes to re-visit the place again very soon to see if anything else happens.

Pontefract as had its fair share of stories over the last few years regarding alleged ghost sightings throughout the town. Rotherham-ghosts were quite excited when they were invited by the landlord to go and do an investigation in the Red Lion Pub over night.

The 1600 century building was originally a coaching Inn and residence before becoming a hotel. The hotel closed its doors around 50 years ago but the pub stayed open, However, the previous owners were plagued by strange happenings about 20 years ago so decided to screw shut every door on the 2nd floor heading towards the Great Hall along with the corridors leading to it, and all the doors on the 3rd floor, they stayed sealed until the new landlord took over in 2006.

Not deterred or worried by the local stories he re-opened the rooms, but by doing this opened up something else and the strange occurrences started to happen again. The current landlord says that he as experienced all sorts of strange happenings which include footsteps, objects being thrown, strange lights and dark shadows.

A medium visited the building and uncovered an alleged dark past which tied in some of the history of the building which included, the third floor being used as an illegal abortion clinic. A sole of a lost child in one of the hotel rooms and evidence of black magic taking place in the main hall.

When the Rotherham-ghosts team arrived, they were expecting the usual run of the mill pub investigation, but were shocked and surprised at the shear size of the building and the fact it had been closed up and untouched for so long, even the screw holes were still in the frames of the doors where the landlord had removed them.

The Investigation

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very mild night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the building before settling down to conduct the evening investigations.

After Toby (The Landlord) showed us around, we decided to start in the main all, all the group felt that there was something in there, what many of us described as from another realm.

The Main Hall

We set the cameras up and as soon as they started to roll, orbs of all shapes and sizes seem to come from out of the mirror over the grand fire place. The temperature readings were going up and down and an uneasiness was felt by the team. Then both  Mike and Joe saw a large orb appear which we caught on camera.

Later on during the investigation, Joe said that he had seen a black shadow lurking around a door way in the great hall, but the camera didn’t pick anything up. All of a sudden, both Richard and Joe let out a shout. They had seen what they described as a figure appearing from the floor in the middle of the room, unfortunately the camera wasn’t pointing in the same direction, so we did capture anything on film.

The Priest Corridor

The team tried to get themselves comfortable, in what we all described as a very tense atmosphere, the feeling of being watched by something that clearly didn’t want us there. (Looking back it was quite amusing that 4 full grown men daren’t be in the place alone).  Again this place was very eerie and many orbs and strange noises were witnessed by the team. We didn’t spend much time in this location due to the very oppressive atmosphere.

Bedroom 14

The team spent time both inside and out of the room, the story is said that a young girl is trapped there. We all thought that the atmosphere was quite cal in there and nothing much seemed to happen, until went out into the corridor where orbs again were witnessed visually by the team, unfortunately not all of these were caught on tape, but we did manage to get some of them (see video)

The Attic

Not much was known about the attic, only that there was a presence of a man up there, after spending around a hour conducting a vigil in there the team decided there was not much happening but we’d leave a camera locked off just in case. Upon reviewing a total of 18 hours of footage of the night’s whole investigation, we found that in the attic where the camera was locked off, the door had actually opened and closed all by itself.

The Rotherham-ghosts team can confirm that there was no one in this room and the time.

Conclusion

The team left the Red Lion around 0400 hours, a little spooked to say the least at the nights events, we all agreed that this one of the most haunted places that we had investigated, not only by capturing things on film but actual feeling the atmosphere in the place.

Many strange things happened on the night that had no rational explanation, this was unlike any other investigation that we had ever been too.

Rotherham-ghosts would like to thank Toby for his hospitality and look forward to returning in the future.

Rowtor Rocks Derbyshire

Time: 01:00 Hours

E.M.F. Reading: 0.0

Temperature reading: 1.0 Degrees Centigrade

Investigators: Richard, Joe, Mike and Wez

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Night Vision Camcorders, Digital Voice Recorder, Thermometer, Torches.

Experiments: None (Due to weather conditions)

Over view:

Birchover as a rock formation called Rowtor rocks consisting of several tunnels, carvings and caves. It is situated close to the Nine Ladies, a local stone circle. There is also a protest site in the area where a community of around 30 people live permanently to protest against the building of a large environmentally damaging quarry.

Many people believe that the area was once used by Druids as a ceremonial worship site. This theory is supported by the local stone circle and the strange carvings to be found in the rock formation by the village.

In the Early Bronze Age, it is possible that natural rock pillars on Stanton Moor in Derbyshire may have been part of the reason why this was the ‘right place’ to build stone circles and to bury the dead. At around the same time, or perhaps a little earlier, people carved hard-to-interpret patterns on rock outcrops at nearby Rowtor and Harthill.

The Investigation:

The team arrived at Rowtor Rocks a little nervous at what was going to happen. We had been there a couple of times before without equipment and had felt as though the place had some history behind it. Coupled with the story’s that we knew and how high and isolated the location was, anything could happen.

We first of all carried out some filming of the area before we conducted the investigation. It was decided that due to the location being out in the open that any experiments that we would try would be rendered useless, due to the weather and being open to the natural elements.

Investigation 1: The Condemned Mans Cell

First of all we gathered in the condemned mans cell and tried some calling out. We waited for about 45 minutes, before we got a loud bang which seemed to come from within the room we were in. But we were unable to establish what made the bang; there’s was no objects in the room with us at the time that could have made it. Also, upon exiting the cave Mike said that the equipment he was carrying (The Tripod) felt as though it was being pulled from his hand again we were unable to establish what could have caused this.

Investigation 2: Black Magic Caves

We conducted our second vigil in the black magic caves; there have been many reports that chanting can be heard from this area. Joe and Wez had both heard this on a previous visit. We decided to use the sonic mic and some calling out to see if we could capture any of the chanting on EVP, but after over an hours worth of recording nothing could be heard when the digital voice recorder was played back later. However the wind was quite strong, preventing proper recordings.

Investigation 3: High Priests Caves

The 3rd and final investigation was done in the high priests caves, we spent over and hour and 15 minutes here with the EMF meter and sonic mic, but nothing happened.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham Paranormal team left Rowtor Rocks around 4:00am, quite pleased with the night’s events, particularly that bang that we heard in the cave area. When conducting outdoor investigations it’s always difficult to catch anything that you can class a paranormal, but the bang in the cave, certainly was. The main area of activity that we seemed to get during the night was at the start in the condemned mans cell. The Rotherham Paranormal team would recommend a visit to the place, but definitely in day light as the area is quite high up and could be dangerous.

Skidbrooke Church Lincolnshire

Location: Skidbrooke Church, Lincolnshire

Date: 16 November 2007

Time: 2300 Hours

E.M.F. Reading: 0.0

Temperature reading: 2.4 Degrees Centigrade

Investigators: Richard, Joe & Mike

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Digital voice recorders, Night Vision Camcorders, Thermometer, Torches.

Experiments: E.M.F

Overview:

Skidbrooke Church is an abandoned church deep in Lincolnshire not far from the east coast, the whole place as an eerie feel about it as you approach but once inside, does feel quite calm.

The church is isolated in and is surrounded by a small cluster of trees with a small grave yard which compliments it.

The church gained the name as the Demon church as it was regularly used by Satanists in the latter part of the 70's and 80's.  Many paranormal groups have visited and reported the place to be quite active.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a cold night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The only areas we could investigate were the main church room and the grounds. The upstairs is inaccessible due to compulsory repairs to roof to shelter it from the rain and taken place so no upper floor access was possible.

Upon entering the Church, it did seem to feel quite calm, but as Richard was doing the introduction to the video, he noticed what he describes as a light formation coming from the corner of the room. This was unusual because the church is literally in the middle of a field and there are no roads near by.

Joe decided to conduct an E.M.F. experiment  to try and capture something on tape. But after reviewing it back later nothing was caught.

Not much seemed to happen for several hours until, Richard and Joe both heard a noise, this was unexplainable due to the isolation of the building, but after reviewing the tape, the noise could be heard quite clearly.

Nothing much else seemed to happen, but after reviewing the tape upon returning home, we noticed that there was a mist appeared on the camera. This wasn’t noticed at the time by Mike who was holding the camcorder at the time filming Richard. The Rotherham-ghosts team can confirm that there were no other mists caught during the evenings filming.

Conclusion:

Skidbrooke Church is still a great place to investigate, and the Rotherham-ghosts team would recommend it to anyone who may be interested in investigating the paranormal. However, we wouldn’t advise going alone for safety reasons.

Stoney Middleton Derbyshire

Location: Stoney Middleton

Date: 18 January 2008

Time: 21:45 Hours

E.M.F. Readings: 0

Temperature readings: 1.5 Degrees

Investigators: Richard and Mike

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Night Vision Camcorders, Thermometer, Torches.

Overview:

Stoney Middleton as a number of caves buried in the deep valley rock face. Over the years many people have mined this site and lost their lives. Now in recent times, this is a place for walkers and cavers, but like many old places it seems to have it’s fair share of ghosts sightings.

This location was recently used in the popular series of Most Haunted.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a cold night, and we set off up the valley side to try and find the caves, the weather was quite bad and a large amount of rain had fallen over the past few days.

We managed to find one of the caves and settled down to conduct the vigil.

Nothing much seemed to be happening until, so Mike decided climb up in the one of the smaller caves and carry out a solo vigil. It was quite high to climb up but he managed to do it, he spent quite a while up there alone and not much seemed to happen. Apart from Mike unable to breath properly.

Mike went outside while Richard conducted a lone investigation, but all was very quiet.

We went to look for the other caves, but due to the bad weather we were unable to gain access to them safely.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left the Stoney Middleton around 0150 hours a little disappointed with their results of the evening.

Not much seemed to happen there and the place as a whole was very quiet. However we did decided that we would revisit the place in the summer when weather conditions were much better and try to gain access to the other caves.

The Rotherham-ghosts team would NOT advise anyone going up there after dark for health and safety reasons.

Sutton Scarsdale Hall Derbyshire

Location: Sutton Scarsdale Hall, Derbyshire

Date: 11 January 2008

Time: 2315 Hours

E.M.F. Reading: 0.0

Temperature reading: 4.5 Degrees Centigrade

Investigators: Richard, Mike

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Night Vision Camcorders, Digital Voice Recorder, Thermometer, Torches.

Experiments: Locked off camcorder

Overview:

Sutton Scarsdale Hall is a ruined stately home in Sutton Scarsdale, just outside Chesterfield, Derbyshire. A former Georgian mansion with gardens, it was built in 1724 to the designs of Francis Smith for the 4th Earl of Scarsdale. It as been roofless since about 1920 when parts of the building were dismantled and sold, some shipped to the USA.

The hall as the reputation to be a very haunted house; witnesses have seen disembodied floating body parts, footfall and strange tobacco smells, sometimes unexplained screams. Moving shadows have also been captured in the cellar area by paranormal Investigators.

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold and windy night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the vigil.

The main areas we were concentrating on were the cellars and main sheltered rooms of the hall.

Due to bad weather conditions, we initially started by locking off a camera pointing in to the cellars. The cellars are now closed off from public access, however there is a window at the base of the building which as bars on, so we could point the camera into the room. We left the camera rolling for just over an hour before we conducted vigils in the main building.

The main building, is open to the air, with no roof or windows in. We wondered around the house, when Richard noticed that there seemed to be a shadow on one of the walls. After investigating this further, it did appear to be a reflection of a tree from a street lamp.

After around an hour of filming we decided to take a break. During this break Mike heard what he describes as a Scottish man speaking to him. We did look around the house and grounds to see if there was anyone else there with us, but we couldn’t find anyone.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-ghosts team left the area around 0045 hours a little disappointed with their results of the evening, due to the really bad weather conditions.

We still couldn’t explain what the voice was what Mike heard, and unfortunately the camera wasn’t rolling when it happening, the shadowy figures were explained by the street lights causing a shadow from a tree onto the wall.

Sutton Scarsdale Hall is a fascinating building and we encourage anyone who is interested in the paranormal to take a trip up there and have a look for themselves.

Winnats Pass Derbyshire

Location: Winnats Pass, Derbyshire

Date: 4 April 2008

Time: 23:30 Hours

E.M.F. Reading: 0.0

Temperature reading: 3.0 Degrees Centigrade

Investigators: Richard, Joe, Mike

Equipment used: E.M.F, Digital Cameras, Night Vision Camcorders, Digital Voice Recorder, Thermometer, Torches.

Experiments: None (Due to conditions)

Over view:

Legend as it that Winnats Pass is haunted by the ghosts of a pair of newlyweds, named Alan and Clara who were murdered there over 300 years ago. The five men widely believed to be responsible for the crime were never convicted, but all subsequently died in mysterious circumstances...

The side-saddle, from which the woman was dragged before she was killed, is now on display in the Speedwell Cavern visitor’s centre, at the foot of the pass.

Sightings have been reported of both the newlyweds and the minors running down the hill towards the road…

The Investigation:

Upon arriving at the location, it was a very cold clear but windy night, we started by getting ourselves familiar with the area before settling down to conduct the Investigation.

We all entered the cave a little apprehensive but eager to see if we would see anything or witness anything out of the ordinary.

Due to the size of the cave and the fact it was flooded at the time, we only had access to about the first 20 feet, however, Mike did manage to go a little further with the aid of Richards wife’s wellington boots.

We walked the full length of the cave first to familiarise ourselves with the layout, Richard had forgotten some equipment from the car and while he was their a motorist stopped, thinking that he’d broken down. After he explained who we were and what we were doing. They proceeded to confirm that the stories we were investigating were quite well known around the area and that we were in the right location. They also confirm that ghosts had been spotted around the cave entrance to where we were.

Not much really happened on the investigation apart from a noise that Mike and Joe heard, what they described as a rumbling noise, after reviewing the footage of the video later on, it was quite difficult to make out.

Conclusion:

The Rotherham-paranormal team left the area around 01:30 due to space being limited in the cave and not much happening, which is quite normal for an outside investigation. This location was very interesting and we certainly plan to return in the future to check the place out again. To see if we can witness for ourselves the newlyweds or the running miners….
